Each one of my paintings is inspired by events and people in my life. The way I create my paintings can happen in one of two ways. Most often I come up with an idea or a feeling I want to express. The idea can come directly from events in my life or from a song or phrase. Then I think off an image that best represents that idea or feeling. The other way is that I come up with an image I want to paint. These type paintings don’t always have an obvious link to my personal experiences.

Under the Pale Moonlight

This one is based on several ideas. In very simple terms this painting was inspired by my muse, Heather. The reality is that she is just a fantasy. I try to make it a surreal image, something that will never happen in the real world.

Everything Dies

Nothing is static, the world is constantly changing. This one is based on the concept of how love for somebody dies.

Light Up the Darkness

My favorite person on human history is Bob Marley. He said that in the face of evil you can’t turn away or stay home. You face it, and light up the darkness.

Beauty is Pain

This painting was kind off inspired by a stripper. Well, more like her tattoo. I taught her tattoo read “reality is pain” I was like “Wow, that’s one deep stripper!” But it actually read “Beauty is pain” not as good as my original reading but still pretty good. I haven’t been able to come up with an image for “reality is pain” so I went with this one.

Tree of Life

The image in this painting is of a dying tree. The tree stands alone on hill, with storm clouds overhead. The tree has had a difficult existence, but it still stands. The idea I was trying to convey is the harshness of life. From an environmental sense; the world is being destroyed, the world has been twisted and is scarred by human civilization. From an individual point of view; life can twist and scar individuals. An individual may overcome life’s difficulties, but there are always scars left.

I was commissioned to paint a seascape scene for this painting. I recognize it as my style, but it is not something I would paint on my own. My paintings are dark, moody, and have multiple meanings. I actually enjoy making this painting. It was a challenge to change my style a bit. My paintings are usually smooth, velvety; without texture. The pelican was fun to paint because I hadn't tried to do texture before. I don't know if you can tell from the picture, but I think I got the looks of feathers down. The palm leaves weren't that difficult, pretty much same approach as rose petals. For the palm trunk, I decided to keep it simple. Over all, this painting was a good learning experience for me.

Burned With Desire

The idea for this painting came from an Armin van Buuren song and partly from a personal experience. In this painting I try to go with lighter colors and tried to convey a sense of heat. The flower is supposed to be glowing hot, as if it were metal.  The bright colors turned out to be more difficult to work with than I anticipated. I am content with the final product, but it is not what I set out to do.

In this painting I am to convey the feeling of perceiving beauty. When I see beauty, its obvious; it stands out. I painted a red rose with a black and white background. The black and white background highlights the beauty of the rose. Red is passion, desire, lust; for something that is unique in a gray world. The rose seems more alive, than its background. Beauty is beauty because it stands apart from the normal world.

This painting is based on a Shiny Toy Guns album cover, We Are All Pilots. I like the sense of tranquility of this picture; it also has a kind of loneliness to it. My painting is much darker than the picture. It is meant to represent the sadness and loneliness that can be felt when depressed. The viewer is about to go down a path where there is nothing, just black emptiness. At the other side of this path, are mountains that only promise an uphill climb. This one has turned out to be one of my most popular paintings. Most people like the tranquility and the colors of the painting.

This painting has the distinction to be the first painting to be sold. “Winter” as based on a black and white picture. I have always wanted to paint a black and white painting. The picture which it is based on has darker colors. My painting is intended to create a sense of serenity and peace. Depending on the viewers mood it can seem sad.
